As if anyone needed yet another reason to avoid the clap. Typical symptoms of gonorrhoea include a thick green or yellow discharge from the vagina or penis, pain when peeing and, in women, bleeding between periods. It only makes sense that bad breath can, too. So why couldn't having a nastymicrobial invasion directly or indirectly cause oral odor? We already know that odor-causing conditions like thrush (an oral yeast infection) can be transmitted in the bedroom. Some STDs - including gonorrhea - are caused by bacterial infections.

At TheraBreath, we've spent decades teaching the public that bacteria are what cause 90 percent of the odor in bad breath. "Perhaps, the immune-dependent reduction of the scent pleasantness in the acute phase of is part of an evolutionary mechanism ensuring, unconsciously, avoidance of a risky romantic partner," they theorized - meaning that around sexual infections, our noses may tip us off (or really, turn us off). Odor-testers often described the smell as "putrid." So what was going on here? Can STDs really cause bad breath? Researchers sure seemed to think so. Men with this STD tended to have smellier breath. (It's the third-largest city in Russia.) But still, this was in the name if science, people! The Russian scientists came to an interesting discovery. Before you judge, ask yourself: What else is there to do in Novobirsk in the dead of winter, besides sniff the saliva and sweat of men with the clap?. Then, they lined up the samples and smelled them. Researchers asked for saliva and armpit sweat samples from each man. They gathered together nearly three dozen young men, about half of whom had gonorrhea (or were recovering from it). For the investigation, a team of Russian specialists from the Tomsk and Kemerovo State Universities in Novobirsk tried a simple experiment. It may sound funny - and c'mon, it is - but the science behind this shudder-inducing paper is quite serious, and the connection between halitosis, body odor, microbes and STDs is deeper than you might think.

But when this one hit our desk, we were flabbergasted: According to a new study out of Russia, men may get bad breath from a sexually transmitted disease (STD). You see, at TheraBreath we come across dozens and dozens of news stories every week about the connection between bad breath and bacteria.

Oh dear, how shall we put this one delicately. Follow MyHealthNewsDaily staff writer Rachael Rettner on Twitter. This story was provided by MyHealthNewsDaily, a sister site to LiveScience. Pass it on: Sexually transmitted diseases may make people smell less pleasant to the opposite sex. If symptoms are present, you may notice an odor or experience: a burning sensation when you pee green, yellow, or white discharge from your penis soreness, bleeding, or itching around your. However, those with STD infections are not at a loss in terms of attracting a mate - the researchers noted that body odor can be improved by deodorants. These studies "call attention to the crucial role of the immune system in the modulation of odor attractiveness resulting from an infection," the researchers wrote. Previous studies in animals have found that infecting the mice with parasites or viruses reduces the attractiveness of their smell to female mice. The researchers speculated that the men's immune systems might be involved because they found a link between the concentration of disease-fighting proteins called antibodies in the men's saliva and how pleasant their sweat smelled to women: the higher the antibody concentration, the lower the score. And while 26 percent of the healthy men smelled "floral," just 10 percent of those with gonorrhea were described that way. And the women said about 50 percent of men who had gonorrhea had sweat that smelled "putrid," whereas only 32 percent of the healthy men were described as putrid. The women rated the infected men's sweat as less than half as pleasant as the healthy men's sweat. The researchers asked 18 healthy women to sniff the vials and rate the pleasantness of the smell on a 10-point scale (with higher scores indicating a more pleasant smell), and also to choose a word from a list to describe the odor (including "putrid," "floral," "vegetable," "woody," "minty" and "fruity"). Gonorrhea: Bloody discharge with a fishy smell or mushroom-like odor is a common symptom of Gonorrhea.

The men wore T-shirts with cotton pads in the armpits for one hour, then the pads were placed in glass vials.
